C A R T E & STARR
C A R T E Inc. & STARR
CARTE (Child Abuse Resolved through Education) was established November 26, 1990 as a California 501C3 non-profit organization to educate the general public about the devastating effects of child abuse, and to provide an intensive experiential treatment program called the STARR Life and Leadership Course for at-risk teenage girls who have been bullied, sexually abused, and/or abandoned.
CARTE is financially supported by a portion of the revenues generated from Create A Thriving Life Story™ Programs, and by the parent company, Leadership Education Action Programs (LEAP), and from generous donors who recognize the breakthrough work we have been doing with at-risk teenage girls for over 25 years.
Vision Statement:
CARTE’s vision is to be a bold interruption in the cycle of the abuse and exploitation of teen girls. Through its accelerated STARR Life and Leadership Course, these at-risk teenage girls can begin the healing process and redefine themselves as strong, pure, vital young women, rather than victims of a shameful past.
The STARR story is taken from an updated version we did of the Starfish Story.
There was a teenage girl who, as she was walking along the beach, picks up one starfish and throws it back into the ocean. A man comes along and asks, “Why are you doing that, there are tens of thousands of starfish that have washed ashore and will die, what possible difference can you make?” The girl picked up another starfish and as she threw it back into the water she looked at him and said, “It makes a difference to this one.”
In today’s technological world, the girl goes to the ocean with her cell phone, blasts a post or tweet to all her friends, to also send to their friends, inviting them to come and help her save thousands of starfish. A single message goes viral! That’s what we can do with Create a Thriving Life Story™. We know that as you become engaged in creating a new life story for yourself, you’ll realize the difference you can make in the lives of those relationships around you. A single message goes viral!

STARR was specifically designed to empower at-risk teenage girls, ages 14-18, who are struggling with debilitating self-esteem and confidence issues because of having been bullied, sexually abused, and/or abandoned. Their full participation in STARR will support each girl in developing a strong sense of self; equipping her to set boundaries, make healthier choices, and ultimately thrive academically, economically, and socially.
The girls come to us from all socio-economic conditions; most whose parents cannot afford to register their daughters in such a dynamic program and some come to us from the social services system. Low self-worth is prevalent amongst a high percentage of these girls, and if there is no intervention, the consequences can be devastating.
